Safe and Inclusive Schools - Suspensions and Expulsions

    Suspensions

A suspension means students are removed from school temporarily for a specific period of time. Students may be suspended for a period of time ranging from one school day to 20 school days. Students who are suspended for more than five school days are considered to be on long-term suspension.

Students who have been suspended for a period of six (6) days or more have an opportunity to participate in the Ottawa Catholic School Board Intervention Program, out of the St. Ambrose Centre of Excellence at 175 Beech Street in Ottawa. Get directions >>

The child's home school will first complete a Student Action Plan and will arrange for work to be sent to the principal of Safe Schools at the Intervention Program site. Students on long-term suspension may have an opportunity to meet with the Safe Schools social worker, the Safe School psychologist, and the principal of Safe Schools. A classroom teacher will assist with the academic requirements and implement accommodations if the student has an individualized education plan (IEP). Ministry regulations require that students who have been suspended for more than ten (10) days have an opportunity to participate in both an academic and a non-academic program. The non-academic program will be monitored by the Safe Schools social worker and the Safe Schools psychologist.

    Expulsions

Expulsions are different from suspensions, as they do not have a time limit. Expelled students are removed from school for an indefinite time period. Students are suspended first, while expulsion is being considered. Students can be expelled from their own school, or they can be expelled from all schools within the Board.

Students who have been expelled from all Board schools must participate in the Ottawa Catholic School Board Program for Expelled Students prior to re-registering in any Ottawa Catholic School. The program for expelled students is located at the St. Ambrose Centre of Excellence at 175 Beech Street in Ottawa. Get directions >>

Expelled students will have an opportunity to meet with the Safe Schools social worker, the Safe Schools psychologist, and the Principal of Safe Schools. A classroom teacher will assist with the academic requirements and implement accommodations if the student has an individualized education plan (IEP). Ministry regulations require that students who have been expelled have an opportunity to participate in both an academic and a non-academic program. The non-academic program will be monitored by the Safe Schools social worker and the Safe Schools psychologist.
