    French as a Second Language (FSL) Pathways
    and Dual-Track Centres

    All of our schools offer French as a Second Language (FSL) programs and French Immersion pathways for our students.

    The Immersion French program at the elementary level (Grades 4-6) is offered at schools called Dual-Track Centres.  Schools which are not Dual-Track Centres are designated as feeder schools for a specific centre. If you choose the Immersion French program for your child, and your home school is not a Dual-Track Centre, your child will be bussed from a stop near your home or caregiver to the designated Dual-Track Centre school. See the list of Dual-Track Centres and feeder schools >>

    Entry Point for Immersion
    The Ministry of Education requires students to have completed 3800 hours of French instruction by the end of Grade 8 in order to enter the French Immersion program in Grade 9. In order to meet this requirement, Grade 4 is designated as the entry point for Immersion.

    For an overview of the FSL programs available, read the article Mais Oui, Learning French at the OCSB >>, published in the October 2011 issue of Ottawa Life Magazine.

    FSL Homework Toolbox is a useful FSL resource for parents and students in Ontario. The website features: general tips for learning French; strategies for reading, writing and mathematics; tips for completing homework; learning skills and work habits; research skills; glossaries;
              frequently asked questions; and popular French books and music.

    The charts below show the pathways to French instruction available to all students and the language of instruction for each subject in a given pathway.

    All half-day kindergarten sites (both junior and senior) offer French Immersion (50/50) programs, and existing full-day kindergarten sites (both junior and senior) offer Extendend French (25/75) programs. However, full-day kindergarten sites opening in September 2012 will begin as French Immersion (50/50) programs. This pilot model will be evaluated, and a recommendation for all full-day kindergarten
                       sites will be submitted to the Board for the 2013-2014 school year.

     Grades 9-12

    Core French: Students in the high school Core French pathway are required to obtain 1 credit in a course where French is the language of instruction. However they are encouraged to continue to take French Language Arts courses throughout high school at the Academic, Applied, Open, and University Preparation levels. Pursuing additional language courses creates opportunities for further study in French after high school. The Core French pathway allows students to develop functional fluency in French.

    French Immersion: Students in the high school French Immersion pathway are required to obtain 10 credits in courses where French is the language of instruction. Students have a wide choice of subjects in the areas of Geography, History, Religion, Civics, Career Studies, Physical Education, as well as French Language Arts. The French Immersion pathway helps students to develop a high degree of fluency and spontaneity in French. View the French courses in this year’s High School Course Selection Guide >>
